AUGUST 28 - DAY OF HISTORY-
by Jerry Pippin
(9:30 p.m Eastern) "I have a dream" comes true- First issued in front of the Washington Monument 45 years ago and now instead of ringing words of liberty in the sun, blacks were ushered out of town before nightfall back then, tonight 86,000 people packed into a football stadium that is a mile heigh, a good commentary on the night itself, America has conquered one of its worse angels of the soul, segregation.
Barack Obama, a bi-racial candidate and for the first time an African American promise was fulfilled as he accepted the nomination of the Democratic Party for the Presidency of the United States.
Racial overtones were conjured up through the week but just as Obama showed tonight in front of this outdoor crowd with words reaching for the stars, the racial divide was breached. Interestingly enough, this week was the 101st Birthday of President Lyndon Johnson who as a Texas politician made the first moves toward tonight's event, when he pushed thru the civil rights laws after President John Kennedy's death.
In the final analysis Barack Obama reached out touched the better angels tonight and politics took a break from the attack, even though there were some attacks, but mostly there was the hope of change.
