CLOSE QUARTERS BUT NO ONE GOT SLAPPED
by Jerry Pippin
(10-15-08) Joe the Plumber was front and center as Mr. typical. The plumber in Ohio evidently will make more than $250,000 and evidently the real facts are that 80 per cent of Americans will pay less taxes under Barack Obama and 20 per cent will fare better under McCain. The problem was plain and simple McCain had a huge hill to climb and even though they were sitting close, both seemed a little tense. McCain looked like he might explode and Obama seemed like he wanted to get it over and go home. Why not? He is leading. We saw this with Obama in some of the primaries.
Moderator Bob Schieffer was the best moderator and he asked some more direct questions and did not always reach his goal of keeping them on answering the subject. But he was close. Debate over vouchers seemed to something of a policy question but debate over abortion seemed to be little better than McCain's allegations about Obama denying hospital care for certain women. Obama seemed to answer that very successfully. Health Care once again was a good debate but it appeared that Obama might have the higher road on the subject. McCain came out for stem cell research but he didn't say he would sign that bill which was vetoed by President Bush. |
Final Presidential Debate, pt. 1 - John McCain and Barack Obama were sitting very close to each other and the first part of debate showed tenseness because of it.
Final Presidential Debate pt.2- Moderator Bob Schieffer tried to keep the candidates on point in answering the questions but despite his best efforts he fell short, but not as short as the other moderators. The debate was spirited and open ended.
Final Presidential Debate pt 3 - McCain and Obama seemed to sense the end of the debate was near and fell back into previous character niches including their closing statements.

It was probably a little better debate for a former high school debater like me, but far from a real debate. We have to give kudos to whomever got them to sit so close to each other. Who won tonight? Obama seems to have won it, but not by such a convincing margin. Obama has shown huge gains in support among white men for instance and he probably helped himself with that group tonight, but remember he had a lot of ground to make up to get those increases in support and it is tenuous. It appears they had a chance to slash and burn each other but passed with the understanding that there are enough butchers in the crowds of supporters to more than do enough damage between now and election day. The debates held a lot of promise and some of that was met but mostly it was promises failed. From McCain's stand point, he never was able to turn the conventional wisdom that Obama was the winner and will be for this year and for Obama he probably should be even further ahead in this election due to circumstances of a bad war, a terrible economy and a vivid daily demonstration by the present administration of being clueless.
