STRANGE BUT TRUE -
Democrat Turncoat Highlight of Second Night of Convention By Jerry Pippin
(09-02-08) - Seldom do we watch a divorce on TV except for daytime soaps and reality shows, but it happened tonight. Senator Joseph Lieberman who is officially an Independent kept referring to himself as a Democrat yet he professed his love for another in front of millions. He obviously has gone red from blue and his former enemies in Connecticut politics in the audience were cheering him. The most interesting thing was for the first time I can remember when Bill Clinton's name was mentioned, there were no boos, because of the way Lieberman framed his statements.
This is not the first time the Republicans or the Democrats have used turncoats. Mayor John Lindsey, Republican from New York, ended up cheering for Jesse Jackson. Last time around, in 2004 Zel Miller Senator and Governor and a Democrat at the time, cheered George Bush. Finally as in any divorce, Lieberman might lose big time for his switch, if the Democrats win more seats in the Senate than his Democratic seat in the caucus and maybe his committee chairman.
Don't get the idea this Republican Party has morphed into something else. It is still the party of God, Country and conservatism. Senator Fred Thompson, well known actor and former Tennessee Senator used the liberal word with a smear about Obama and gave the party faithful some red meat on abortion. President Bush in his TV address was kind of an understatement which in its self is strange as well. The last time a sitting President did not appear was the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago when LBJ besieged with a war, much like Bush, did not show up.
The Vice Presidential Lady candidate seems to be holding her support with delegates even though the press has been unmerciful on her personal life and some corruption issues. Sarah Palin at least on the surface is still in favor with most of the delegates, remember in 1972, George McGovern was praising his Vice Presidential pick, Thomas Eagleton, but with all the bad news by day four, he was dropped from the ticket. Tomorrow night Governor Palin will be there on stage with her 17 year old pregnant daughter and the boy friend. Family values party time?

(9-1-08) 11:00 p.m. - It is a strange ritual in St.Paul for the Republicans. First of all, they were knocked off the headlines by Hurricane Gustav, sort of a pay back for the screw ups the administration had over Katrina three years ago almost to the day. Strange because a polling of delegates shows clearly the delegates still love Dubya even though the nation has been out of love for some time. Strange because their party's nominee is clearly out of step with the far right nature of most of the delegates and it showed up big time today in the Platform report.
The Republican party still is the party that thinks abortion is a key issue and the family values issue took another hit today when it was revealed that a shotgun wedding was in store for the Vice Presidential nominee's 17 year old daughter who turned up pregnant. Never fear, Newt Gingrich was telling anyone that would listen, this shows the party of Lincoln and McCain are really family oriented, I mean they are getting married, aren't they?
A CBS news poll today showed Obama/Biden with an 8 point lead over McCain/Palin. Somehow I thought it might be even a bigger gap, after all, Obama 's speech got 38 million viewers in the Neilson overnights last week, more than any other political speech ever and more than the Olympic opening ceremonies. But despite wind, rain, and screw ups from the past, the GOP put the best face forward today in St. Paul if you didn't look outside at the NAZI storm troopers beating up on the peace demonstrators including an elderly nun.
Republican wives stand by their men and that was certainly the case today. President George was in Texas directing Gustav relief. He probably never thought it would make it to his home state but tonight it is heading for East Texas, probably not enough punch to push all the way to Crawford, so the Cowboy President won't have to worry about his own safety but he still worries about those horses which he is still fearful I understand. So his good wife, Laura showed up in St. Paul to make a nice speech about how much George and the GOP cares about those poor Louisiana Cajuns and then multi-millionaire Cindy, wife of of the nominee, threw in a few morsels of her own in support of the friendly, compassionate Republican party.
So there it was, all in a tight little ball of wax, under three hours running time at St. Paul and not many people noticed that President and Vice President both, were missing in action. Where was McCain today? In Philadelphia, I guess a nice place to spend the Labor Day holiday? Oh, one other thing.
Mrs. Palin hired a lawyer. No not to go after her daughter's boyfriend? She is under intense investigation for "not nice behavior" with tax payer's purse strings. Seven of her Republican law maker friends have been charged already, makes you wonder when Obama's lawyer takes over the Justice Department, will there be any room in the jails for regular crooks, the political crooks will probably be there in large numbers..we can only hope.

McCain Surprises Everyone
by Jerry Pippin (Dayton, Ohio - 8-29-08) In a move that startled the political world, Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate. At a raucous rally Friday in the swing state of Ohio, McCain said he made his pick after looking for a political partner "who can best help me shake up Washington and make it start working again for the people who are counting on us."
Two things are certain with this pick, first of all the Republicans have decided they need to do something startling to try to get back control of the political scene and view the Democratic convention as a success, so they couldn't play it safe. Secondly the Alaska Governor will not get the support of Polar Bear lovers. In one of several anti environmental actions she sued the government over putting the white bears on the endangered species list. She is under an ethics investigation in Alaska where several high-profile Republicans have been charged with corruption this year.
Palin, whose name wasn't on the short list of prospects so heavily discussed publicly in recent weeks, thus became the first woman named to a spot on a Republican ticket. "I am honored," she said as she stood by a beaming McCain in her first few seconds in the national spotlight |
